Gender in motion on and off the tango dance floor

Social anthropologist and tango dancer Christine M. Jacobsen reflects on the role of women and changing gender relations in the contemporary European tango scene, focusing on the emergence of feminist and queer tango spaces. Before that, in a conversation with Jacobsen, Marina Cañardo—former director of the “Museo Casa Carlos Gardel”—talks about pioneering female tango musicians and singers. She highlights the talent and courage of the women who shaped the history of tango in early 20th-century Buenos Aires, at a time when it was difficult for women to access prestigious artistic spaces.
