Welcome to an evening dedicated to the life and legacy of the renowned Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca (1898-1936), hailed as one of the most significant literary figures in both Spanish and world literature.

Blessed with a formidable personality and captivating charisma, his life was tragically cut short whenhe was executed by nationalist forces at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, likely targetedby Francoist forces for both his outspoken political views and his homosexuality. His assassination at theage of 38 turned him into a martyr for freedom of expression and a potent symbol of the violence and repression that characterized Spain's Francoist regime.

Following the success of Canta's previous event honoring Latin American cultural icons GabrielaMistral and Violeta Parra, we now turn our attention to García Lorca's work and the vibrant tapestry of his life, as well as the profound historical context surrounding his death.Through a blend of readings, live music, and visual presentations, we aim to delve into themultifaceted aspects of García Lorca's life and work, illuminating its richness, significance, and relevance in our contemporary world.

English translations will be provided for all presentations, ensuring accessibility and engagement for all attendees.

The event is a collaboration between CANTA and Litteraturhuset i Bergen. With support from the Embassy of Spain in Norway.
